Guest DJing on SiriusXM’s Heart & Soul: A Moment I’ll Never Forget

When the call came in from program director BJ Stone, I froze. I honestly thought it was a mistake. Out of all the DJs in the country — actually, the world, since SiriusXM is global — why me? That question sat with me for a minute. Then it hit me: he must’ve been watching my growth, seeing the consistency, the elevation, the way my IG page has been building year after year.

Radio is a different beast. It’s not like a festival where you feel the crowd’s energy or a club where you can read the room. On the radio, you’re performing for people you can’t see — listeners in their cars, folks streaming on their phones, families vibing at a Labor Day cookout. You have to imagine the audience and still deliver like they’re right in front of you.

I locked in. Hours of practice. Tight blends. Clean transitions. Perfect timing. And of course, song selection — the heart of any great set. Heart & Soul leans heavy into 90s R&B, which is the soundtrack of my childhood, so curating the vibe felt natural. Still, I wanted to make it special.

I reached out to a few friends for drops — Jermaine Dupri, KayGee from Naughty By Nature, and actress Tamela Jones — just to sprinkle a little extra flavor into the mix. Those drops weren’t just fun; they were a stamp. A reminder to listeners that I’m official, ha.

The day of the broadcast, I felt that familiar mix of nerves and excitement. But once the music started, everything clicked. It was just me, the turntables, and the invisible audience riding with me through every blend.

Being the holiday DJ for Heart & Soul on SiriusXM Channel 47 is something I don’t take lightly. It’s an honor. It’s a milestone. And it’s a reminder that the work pays off — the consistency, the growth, the passion.

One day, I’ll have my own show on the air. I can see it clearly. But for now, I’m grateful. Truly. This experience was a blessing, and it’s only the beginning.
